Chapter 14 - THE VISIT EVAN REQUESTED

Two years after the shed, Evan requested a restorative-conference meeting from prison.
Claire ignored it.
Then six months later, another request.
Ignored.
Then a letter.
No guilt pressure.
No “I need closure.”
It said:
I used to think the worst thing that could happen was losing money, then Mom’s house, then the business. I kept shrinking your freedom until my fear felt larger than your person.
Claire read that sentence twice.
Then:
I am not asking you to forgive me. I want to answer anything you still need answered.
Claire surprised herself.
She accepted.
Secure setting.
Mediator.
No physical contact.
Evan entered.
Older.
Quieter.
Claire felt no rush of love.
Good.
She asked:
“Did you plan to hurt me before I got there?”
“No.”
“Did you plan to stop me from leaving?”
“Yes.”
“How early?”
“Before you arrived.”
There.
Premeditated restraint.
Then:
“Did Lorraine tell you to tie me?”
“No.”
“Whose idea?”
“Mine.”
Claire stared.
Evan continued:
“She said keep you there. I chose the rope.”
Accountability.
Then Claire asked:
“If Dad didn’t come, how long would you have kept me?”
Evan’s eyes filled.
“I don’t know.”
Wrong answer.
Claire stared.
He corrected:
“Until you transferred it.”
There.
Truth.
Then:
“And after?”
“I thought we’d go home.”
Claire laughed in disbelief.
“You thought I’d go home with you?”
“Yes.”
That was the deepest delusion.
He believed coercion could end and marriage resume.
Claire stood.
Meeting over.
Then Evan said:
“Claire.”
She turned.
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Not:
May you like
I forgive you.
Enough.
