Chapter 4 - THE MONEY WASN'T FOR EVAN

Evan was arrested.
Lorraine was not.
Not that night.
She claimed she believed Claire was voluntarily discussing a loan with her husband.
She denied knowing Claire was tied up.
Then officers asked:
“Why did you shout, ‘Did she send the money?’”
Lorraine answered:
“Because that was what they were discussing.”
Plausible.
Annoying.
Claire went to the hospital.
No major injury.
Bruised wrists.
Knee strain.
Dehydration.
Emotional shock.
Daniel sat outside the exam room because investigators requested he not be present during her formal statement.
Correct procedure.
He hated every second.
Then Detective Mara Lewis took over.
She was not Daniel’s friend.
Good.
She was professional enough to tell him:
“You’re Dad now.”
He nodded.
Then Claire’s account changed one part of the case.
Evan had said:
“You’re not leaving until Mom gets it.”
Detective Lewis asked:
“Gets what?”
“The fifty thousand.”
“Why would Lorraine get it?”
Claire did not know.
So investigators subpoenaed financial records after prosecutors approved.
What they found did not match Evan’s story.
The $50,000 was not meant to save Evan’s business.
At least not directly.
Lorraine owed $47,600 to a private lender.
A home-equity note?
No.
A personal loan.
Origin:
two years earlier.
Purpose listed:
family investment.
Where had that money gone?
Into Evan’s business.
Lorraine had borrowed to rescue him before.
Then refinanced.
Then borrowed again.
Now the lender threatened to file suit and place a judgment lien against her home.
That was why “Mom gets it.”
But the lender file contained something else.
Lorraine had represented that the repayment source would come from “family liquidity expected this quarter.”
No business sale.
No insurance payment.
No tax refund.
Family liquidity.
Investigators asked what that meant.
The loan officer remembered Lorraine saying:
“My daughter-in-law has cash. We’re consolidating things.”
Claire stared when Detective Lewis repeated it.
“How long ago?”
“Five weeks.”
Five weeks before the shed.
So Lorraine had been promising Claire’s money before Claire agreed to anything.
That changed the emotional timeline.
The shed was not desperation invented that afternoon.
It was the collapse of a plan that had been building for weeks.
Evan wanted Claire’s money to pay Lorraine back for the money Lorraine had already lost saving Evan.
Family debt circulating in a loop.
Then another discovery.
Lorraine had forged Claire’s signature on a prior loan guarantee.
Not successfully funded.
But submitted.
Date:
three months earlier.
Claire stared.
“She tried before?”
Yes.
The lender rejected because signature verification failed.
Lorraine never told Evan?
Probably did.
Then Evan’s texts.
MOM:
She’ll give in.
EVAN:
She changed bank security.
MOM:
Then make her understand consequences.
EVAN:
Dad-cop is the problem.
MOM:
He can’t be everywhere.
Daniel read that line at the station.
Walked into the hallway.
Pressed both hands against a wall.
Breathed.
Then returned.
Controlled.

Because Preston-like villains wanted angry fathers.
Daniel would not become evidence for Evan.
