Chapter 3 - THE CODE

Sophia worked at an information and guest-services desk inside Ashford Mall.
Employees with young children could use a subsidized on-site childcare room during short shifts, emergencies, or schedule overlaps.
Emma did not stay there every day.
But Sophia had registered her.
Approved pickup adults:
Sophia.
Margaret.
Richard.
That was it.
At least Sophia thought so.
The childcare system showed another adult had been added six weeks earlier.
Claire Hale.
Authorization created through the parent portal.
Login:
Sophia Carter.
Verification:
Sophia’s phone number.
One-time code accepted.
Sophia stared.
“I never added her.”
Grace asked:
“Who had your phone six weeks ago?”
“Richard. He always has it.”
The portal log showed the update occurred at 11:36 p.m.
Sophia remembered that night.
She had fallen asleep on the couch after a double shift.
Richard said he charged her phone.
Claire used the pickup code that afternoon.
The childcare attendant assumed Sophia had authorized it.
Emma had been told:
“Aunt Claire is taking you to see Daddy.”
At 12:46, Claire exited through the employee loading area.
Vehicle:
white Honda Pilot.
Plate captured.
Police issued a locate request.
Then Richard’s lawyer, Lauren Pierce, arrived.
Her first statement was careful.
“My client denies ordering any kidnapping.”
Grace replied:
“His sister removed a three-year-old using an authorization added from his wife’s account.”
Lauren said:
“Which may have been created with prior household consent.”
Sophia snapped:
“No.”
Lauren looked at her.
Not cruelly.
Professionally.
“Then we will investigate that.”
Smart.
No confession.
No overreach.
Then Grace asked Richard one question through counsel.
“What needed Sophia’s signature before five?”
Lauren paused.
Richard whispered something.
Lauren’s expression changed.
“A debt acknowledgment.”
Margaret stared.
“For what debt?”
Lauren answered:
May you like
“Approximately one hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.”
Sophia stopped breathing.
