Chapter 9 - THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The document Richard needed signed was called:
SPOUSAL DEBT ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND CONSOLIDATION CONSENT.
It would have done three things.
First:
Sophia acknowledged all listed debts as jointly incurred household obligations.
Second:
She authorized continued use of her payroll deposits for Meridian escrow.
Third:
She waived certain internal disputes about account origination between spouses.
Not a magical document that erased fraud.
Lauren emphasized that.
“It would not prevent Sophia from reporting identity theft.”
True.
But it would complicate future litigation.
Creditors could argue Sophia ratified the debts after learning of them.
Grace asked Richard:
“Why did you need it today?”
Because Meridian’s lawyer requested proof Sophia accepted the consolidated balances before extending the settlement deadline.
Richard had been told:
No acknowledgment, no extension.
Richard panicked.
Then decided Sophia’s fear over Emma could force a signature.
He still denied telling Claire to “kidnap” the child.
His text said:
Take Emma. Keep her with you until I fix this.
Claire replied:
Does Sophia know?
Richard:
She’ll know after.
Claire:
This is messed up.
Richard:
Two hours. Then done.
Enough.
The debt acknowledgment had one more clause Sophia nearly signed without understanding.
It allowed future payroll changes to be treated as automatic consent so long as:
the employer received instructions from the designated household financial agent.
Designated agent:
Richard.
Grace stared at the clause.
“That is broad.”
Lauren replied:
“It is an internal household authorization, not an assignment of wages.”
“Then why is it in a creditor extension packet?”
“Because they wanted stable funding.”
Richard interrupted:
“It just meant I could keep the escrow current.”
Sophia looked at him.
“With my paycheck.”
“With household money.”
“My paycheck.”
“We’re married.”
There it was.
Not a legal argument.
A belief.
