Chapter 6 - THE VERIFICATION CALL

Meridian produced the audio.

Female voice.

“Yes, this is Sophia Carter.”

Grace played it twice.

Sophia shook her head.

“That’s not me.”

Margaret leaned closer.

Then recognized it.

“Claire.”

Richard’s sister.

Claire Hale had impersonated Sophia during debt-settlement verification.

Lauren Pierce closed her notebook.

“That is a problem.”

Understatement.

The call asked:

“Do you understand enrolled creditors may continue collection activity?”

Claire answered:

“Yes.”

“Do you authorize monthly escrow contributions?”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand settlement is not guaranteed?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Are you entering voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

Sophia began crying.

Grace stopped the recording.

Richard said:

“I didn’t know she would pretend to be Sophia.”

Lauren looked at him sharply.

He had just spoken without permission.

Grace asked:

“What did you think she was doing?”

Richard answered:

“Helping with verification.”

“Why would your sister verify your wife’s debt account?”

He said nothing.

That silence hurt him more than shouting would have.

Claire’s voice on the Meridian call was not a perfect imitation.

It did not need to be.

The agent had never met Sophia.

The verification system relied on:

date of birth,

address,

last four digits of Social Security number,

creditor balances,

and a text code.

Claire had all of it because Richard sent her a document packet.

Why involve Claire?

Richard claimed Sophia was sleeping and the enrollment deadline was closing.

Lauren framed it as a terrible shortcut.

Grace framed it as impersonation.

Then investigators found a text.

CLAIRE:

This is illegal.

RICHARD:

It’s not if she already agreed.

CLAIRE:

Then wake her up.

RICHARD:

She’ll panic and say no.

That sentence destroyed the “already agreed” logic.

If Richard believed Sophia had consented, her likely refusal should not have mattered.

He knew the difference between broad trust and specific permission.

He simply preferred the version that got the application completed.
