Chapter 5 - THE ESCROW

The paycheck problem led to Meridian Debt Resolution.

Not a bank.

Not a lender.

A private debt-settlement company.

Richard enrolled Sophia in a program seven months earlier.

The idea:

Stop paying certain unsecured creditors directly.

Deposit money every pay period into a dedicated settlement escrow.

Meridian negotiates reduced balances.

Sophia’s required monthly deposit:

$2,850.

That alone exceeded most of her monthly take-home pay.

Richard supplemented it with transfers from his own income.

At least initially.

Then his hours were cut.

The escrow fell behind.

Today’s deadline:

$1,980.

If missed, a negotiated settlement with Westbridge Retail Credit could collapse.

Richard had expected Sophia’s full paycheck.

It was short.

That was why he came to the mall furious.

Lauren Pierce said:

“Debt-settlement deadlines can be severe. My client was panicked.”

Margaret replied:

“He pulled her hair.”

Lauren nodded.

“I am not defending that.”

Important distinction.

Then Grace asked:

“Who signed Sophia up for Meridian?”

Richard said:

“We did.”

Sophia said:

“I didn’t.”

Meridian file contained an electronic enrollment agreement.

Signature:

Sophia Carter.

IP address:

their home.

Device:

Richard’s laptop.

Verification call:

completed.

Grace requested the recording.

Richard’s expression changed.

The call might answer everything.

Meridian’s contract gave Richard another defense.

The program allowed a spouse to act as an authorized financial helper.

Richard had listed himself.

That meant he could:

upload statements,

speak with negotiators,

change creditor priorities,

and schedule deposits.

He could not:

impersonate Sophia,

change her legal certifications,

or enroll debt she disputed.

Meridian representative Alice Park admitted the line between “helper” and “account holder” had become blurred in practice.

Richard called almost every time.

Sophia almost never did.

Staff began treating him as the customer.

One internal note read:

HUSBAND MANAGES ALL FINANCES. WIFE NOT INVOLVED.

Grace asked:

“Did that concern anyone?”

Alice answered:

“Not enough.”

“Why?”

“Because many couples operate that way.”

May you like

Exactly.

Financial abuse often resembled ordinary household delegation until someone tried to take the authority back.
