Chapter 15 - THE RABBIT

One year later, Marcus hosted a smaller dinner.
No engagement.
No grand announcement.
Julian Croft attended.
Evelyn Shaw too.
Rosa sat at the table as a guest for the first time.
Lily wore another pink dress.
Her stuffed rabbit looked worse than ever.
Marcus placed a small gift beside her plate.
Lily opened it.
A new stuffed rabbit.
She looked offended.
“I have Bunny.”
Marcus laughed.
“Backup Bunny.”
“No.”
Rosa smiled.
“She’s loyal.”
Marcus looked at the old rabbit.
Then at Lily.
A year earlier, a three-year-old had interrupted a room full of wealthy adults because she noticed something hidden.
Not because she understood money.
Because she understood that secrets made her mother afraid.
Marcus asked:
“Do you remember what you told me?”
Lily nodded seriously.
“Look under the table.”
Julian laughed.
Marcus smiled.
“That was good advice.”
Lily looked underneath the table immediately.
Everyone laughed.
Nothing was there.
No envelope.
No ring.
No forged papers.
Just shoes.
Marcus leaned back.
Diana had almost moved $38 million because she believed wealth made systems too complicated for anyone to notice one missing piece.
She forgot something simpler.
Fraud depends on people looking where they are expected to look.
Sometimes the truth survives because someone looks somewhere else.
Lily hugged her old rabbit.
Marcus raised his glass.
“To looking under the table.”
Rosa laughed.
Lily raised her water cup.

And this time, nothing was hidden beneath anyone’s chair.
