Chapter 14 - TWO MOTHERS

Six months later, Ryan invited both women to the same room.

Not for reconciliation.

For truth.

Laura.

Diane.

Claire.

Ryan.

No Lily.

Ryan asked one question.

“What did each of you think was best for me?”

Laura answered first.

“At nineteen, I thought getting healthy and coming back was best.”

Diane:

“I thought staying with us was best.”

Laura continued:

“Then I thought not disrupting your life was best.”

Diane:

“Then I thought not telling you was best.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“All of you kept deciding what was best.”

No one argued.

Then Laura looked at Diane.

“You loved him.”

Diane began crying.

“Yes.”

“You still stole choices from him.”

“Yes.”

Diane looked at Laura.

“You were sick.”

“Yes.”

“You also deserved more help than we gave you.”

Laura’s face broke.

That was the sentence she had waited decades to hear.

Not:

you were perfect.

Not:

we were evil.

You deserved more help.

Ryan watched both women.

For the first time, he did not feel pressure to decide who was “Mom.”

One was his biological mother.

One raised him.

Both loved him.

Both failed him.

Different failures.

Same life.
