Chapter 15 - THE OPEN LOCKET

One year after Lily found the locket, Ryan kept it in a drawer in his office.

Not hidden.

Just stored.

Diane had supervised visits with Lily again after therapy and after Claire agreed.

Short.

Structured.

No forced affection.

Laura had become part of Ryan’s life slowly.

Phone calls.

Lunches.

Photographs.

Stories.

No instant mother-son bond.

Too much history for that.

One Sunday afternoon Lily wandered into Ryan’s office while he was organizing papers.

She pointed at the silver locket.

“That mine?”

Ryan smiled.

“No.”

“Grandma’s?”

He thought.

“Not really.”

“Whose?”

Ryan lifted her onto his lap.

The locket opened.

Baby Ryan.

Laura.

Lily pointed.

“Daddy baby!”

“Yes.”

“Who lady?”

Ryan looked toward the hallway.

Claire stood there.

Watching.

Not intervening.

Ryan answered:

“That’s Laura.”

“Who Laura?”

He paused.

Then smiled.

“She’s one of the people who helped make me.”

Enough for two.

Lily nodded.

Then pointed to the writing.

“What says?”

Ryan swallowed.

Claire stepped closer but did not rescue him.

He had to answer his own life now.

“It says ‘my birth mother.’”

Lily looked confused.

“You have two moms?”

Ryan laughed softly.

“Kind of.”

She considered this.

Then:

“Too many.”

Claire laughed.

Ryan did too.

The heaviness broke.

Lily closed the locket.

Then opened it again.

No terror.

No Diane lunging.

No shouting.

No secrets exploding.

Just an object.

Ryan realized that was what truth eventually did.

At first it detonated.

Then, if people survived it honestly, it became ordinary enough to hold.

Diane had spent thirty-five years treating one truth as if it could destroy a family.

Instead, the lie almost did.

Ryan kissed Lily’s hair.

Claire asked:

“You okay?”

He nodded.

Then corrected himself.

“Getting there.”

Good answer.

He placed the locket back on the desk.

Open.

Not hidden.

May you like

That mattered.

THE END
