Chapter 5 - THE FIRST RETURN
Laura returned eleven months after Ryan’s birth.
By then:
she had completed inpatient treatment,
was living with an aunt,
had a part-time job,
and had letters from two doctors supporting gradual reunification.
She asked for her son.
Diane refused.
Not alone.
Their parents refused too.
They believed:
Ryan was stable,
Laura was fragile,
and moving him back would be dangerous.
Maybe they genuinely believed that.
Then Laura hired a lawyer.
A custody petition was drafted.
Before it was filed, Diane’s father offered Laura money.
$40,000.
Enough in 1992 to change a young woman’s life.
The agreement:
Laura would consent to a private adoption by Diane and Thomas.
Diane told Ryan:
“She signed.”
Ryan stared.
“Did she understand?”
“Yes.”
“Did she want to?”
Diane’s face tightened.
“She knew fighting would hurt you.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Claire watched the pattern repeat.
Diane answered only the question she preferred.
Then Ryan found another letter in Thomas’s envelope.
From Laura.
Never mailed to him.
Diane had kept it.
I signed because Dad said you would be taken by the state if I fought. He said Diane’s lawyer would prove I was dangerous forever. I believed him.
Ryan looked at Diane.
“Did Grandpa tell her that?”
Diane whispered:
“He was scared.”

Ryan’s voice went flat.
“So was she.”
