Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY BREAKS

Clara filed for divorce.

Michael asked for shared custody.

Clara opposed unsupervised overnight custody at first.

The evaluator did not permanently remove him from Lily’s life.

Instead:

supervised visits,

parenting education,

financial-separation order,

gradual review.

Michael attended every visit.

At the first one, Lily would not take a snack from him.

He opened a packet of crackers.

She stared.

“You can have it.”

Lily looked at the supervisor.

Then at Clara through the observation window.

The supervisor said:

“You can choose.”

Lily took one cracker.

Michael cried.

Quietly.

No speech.

No demand for forgiveness.

Evelyn’s contact was more restricted.

She remained convinced some discipline had been justified.

That refusal to fully understand made the court cautious.

Clara did not need Evelyn to call herself a monster.

She needed boundaries that did not depend on insight.

The custody evaluator also challenged Clara.

“You want Michael supervised indefinitely?”

“Right now, yes.”

“Because of the finances or because of Lily?”

“Both.”

“Those are not the same issue.”

Clara knew.

The evaluator continued:

“Has Michael ever physically injured Lily?”

“No.”

“Has he missed visits?”

“No.”

“Does Lily seek him out?”

“Sometimes.”

“Does he acknowledge the food-control problem?”

“More than his mother does.”

The evaluator recommended a path rather than a permanent label.

Supervision first.

Then monitored meals.

Then short unsupervised daytime visits if Michael followed the food plan and parenting recommendations.

Clara hated the idea of giving back trust in measured pieces.

Then she remembered what she had demanded from everyone else.

Evidence.

Not fear.

So she agreed.

Michael’s first unsupervised visit lasted three hours.

He sent no performative photographs.

No long apology.

When Lily returned, Clara asked:

“What did you eat?”

Lily said:

“Grilled cheese. Apple. Cookie.”

“Did you ask for the cookie?”

Lily nodded.

“What did Daddy say?”

Lily shrugged.

“Okay.”

May you like

One ordinary word.

For Clara, it felt enormous.
