Chapter 9 - THE PHOTO METADATA

Michael attacked the notebook.

“My mother writes nonsense.”

Fair.

Evelyn said the targets were household budgeting shorthand.

Also plausible.

Then Rebecca obtained the quarterly photo files.

Metadata showed one set of pantry photographs had been taken at:

Meadow Lane Provisions.

Not the Ward house.

The shelving looked almost identical.

Same white bins.

Same labels.

But one photo contained a wall outlet positioned differently from the Ward pantry.

Small mistake.

Large consequence.

Another image showed the corner of Susan’s catering refrigerator.

The trust administrator believed the photos documented food stored for Lily’s household.

They did not.

Michael said:

“I didn’t take those.”

True.

The upload account belonged to Evelyn.

Evelyn said:

“Michael told me Susan had already bought the month’s groceries.”

Michael turned to her.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“You uploaded them?”

“You told me to handle the photos.”

Lauren Pierce wrote something down.

The defense was beginning to split.

Forensic analyst Priya Shah enlarged the images.

She found more inconsistencies.

A cereal brand visible in the submitted pantry image was never purchased on any Ward household card.

A bulk yogurt case had a distributor label tied to Susan’s catering account.

One photograph contained twenty-four identical protein drinks.

Lily hated them.

Clara had never bought them.

Then Priya compared timestamps with home security entry logs.

The photo labeled:

WARD HOME PANTRY — APRIL 6

was taken at 2:13 p.m.

At that exact time, nobody had entered the Ward house for nearly three hours.

Clara was working.

Evelyn had Lily at preschool pickup.

Michael was at a job site.

The photo could not have been taken in their pantry.

Lauren tried another defense.

“Metadata can be altered.”

Priya agreed.

“Yes.”

“Then this is not conclusive.”

“No.”

Lauren seemed pleased.

Priya continued:

“But the distributor labels, outlet placement, wall seam, and Susan’s own catering-floor photograph independently match the location.”

Lauren stopped smiling.

Strong evidence was rarely one perfect clue.

It was several imperfect clues pointing the same direction.
