Chapter 1 - THE PADLOCK

Clara Ward knew something was wrong before Lily said a word.

The kitchen smelled like bleach and cold soup.

A mop lay crooked beside the sink.

Food was scattered near the baseboard as if someone had swept it away in a hurry.

And the pantry had a padlock.

A steel padlock.

On a pantry door inside Clara’s own house.

Three-year-old Lily stood beside the table in colorful pajamas, clutching her rag doll with both arms.

Her face was wet.

Her breathing came in broken little gasps.

Evelyn Ward stood near the counter, rigid and unapologetic.

Clara crossed the kitchen in three strides.

Her hand moved before she thought.

SLAP.

Evelyn grabbed her cheek.

Clara pointed at the pantry.

“YOU LOCKED THE FOOD?!”

Evelyn stepped back into her face.

“They eat too much!”

Clara grabbed the lock and shoved it toward her.

“SHE’S THREE!”

Lily cried harder.

Evelyn pointed toward the child.

“She needed discipline!”

Clara knocked Evelyn’s hand away.

“DON’T POINT AT MY CHILD!”

Then Clara saw Lily shaking.

Not ordinary crying.

Shaking.

She dropped to her knees and pulled her daughter close.

Lily buried her face against Clara’s shoulder.

Clara wiped her tears.

“Baby, look at me.”

Lily tried.

Her cheeks were blotchy.

“Did Daddy know?”

Lily sobbed.

Then slowly nodded.

Clara stopped breathing.

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“Daddy knew…”

Clara whispered:

“What did Daddy know?”

Lily’s fingers tightened around the rag doll.

“Daddy wouldn’t give me food.”

Something inside Clara went cold.

She stood so quickly the chair behind her scraped across the floor.

She turned to Evelyn.

“WHERE IS MY HUSBAND?!”

For the first time, Evelyn looked uncertain.

Then Clara’s phone vibrated on the counter.

A banking alert.
