Chapter 4 - EVELYN'S RULES

Evelyn had moved into the Ward house temporarily after knee surgery.

That was the official reason.

Six weeks became six months.

Michael said she helped with Lily.

Clara worked long hospital shifts as a physical therapy assistant.

Some days she left before dawn.

Evelyn became the person who:

made breakfast,

packed snacks,

watched Lily after preschool.

Then the rules changed.

One snack in the morning.

One in the afternoon.

No pantry access.

No cereal without permission.

Milk measured.

Fruit counted.

Evelyn claimed structure was good for children.

Clara had pushed back before.

But Michael defended his mother.

“She’s not starving anyone.”

Clara believed him because Lily’s pediatric visits had shown normal growth.

That mattered.

No severe malnutrition.

No dramatic medical collapse.

The harm was real but subtler.

Lily had learned to ask before touching food.

Then learned not to ask.

Then learned that crying could make adults angry.

The padlock was new.

But the control was not.
