Chapter 4 - THE PAPER DAVID NEVER SHOWED HER

The document was inside David’s study.
A draft postnuptial agreement.
Claire’s name appeared on every page.
She had never seen it.
The agreement proposed:
Joint household control over the Rose Mercer Family Trust residence.
Permanent occupancy rights for Evelyn.
A management stipend for Beth.
Expanded decision authority for David if Claire became “emotionally impaired, medically incapacitated, or unavailable.”
Claire read that line twice.
Emotionally impaired.
Maya looked at her.
“That clause is unusual.”
“Unusual how?”
“Broad enough to be abused.”
Then came the signature page.
Claire Mercer.
Digital signature attached.
She had not signed it.
David claimed later it was only a draft.
That mattered.
Drafts are not crimes.
But the metadata showed the signature was copied from an old refinancing document.
And the file name was:
FINAL_AFTER_DINNER.
Claire went cold.

The dinner was not just family pressure.
It was supposed to end with a signature.
