Chapter 7 - DAVID'S COUNTERATTACK

David hired a lawyer.

Smart.

His defense was not ridiculous.

Claire had previously told him:

Handle whatever needs handling with the house.

She had delegated vendor decisions.

Allowed Evelyn to live there.

Paid Beth for occasional events.

Shared broad household authority.

David argued he believed the postnup merely formalized arrangements Claire had already accepted.

Then he attacked the remote.

He called it coercive.

Retaliatory.

A wealthy spouse weaponizing control.

Maya warned Claire.

“Some of that will resonate.”

Claire hated hearing it.

“But the house is mine.”

“The trust’s.”

“Fine. The trust’s.”

“That doesn’t mean occupancy disputes are emotionally simple.”

Claire breathed.

“Okay.”

Then the security footage changed the balance.

David knew Beth planned to make Claire “emotional enough to sign.”

He had said:

Keep Rose out of it.

That helped him slightly.

Then he did nothing when Rose was grabbed.

Then sided with them.

That destroyed the moral distance he wanted.
