Beth’s motives were the simplest.
She was broke.
Not penniless.
Overextended.
Her interior design business had failed quietly.
She owed vendors nearly $190,000.
Credit cards another $70,000.
Evelyn had already loaned her money twice.
David had helped once.
Claire had refused.
That refusal became, in Beth’s mind, betrayal.
The postnup offered Beth a $120,000 annual “residential operations” role at the mansion.
No real job description.
Just income.
Claire stared at the draft.
“She spat in my face because I wouldn’t hire her.”
Maya shook her head.
“No. She spat in your face because she believed your refusal had become morally illegitimate.”
Different thing.
Worse.
Beth had convinced herself family need created entitlement.
Claire’s money was no longer Claire’s.
The house was no longer Claire’s.
