Chapter 8 - ROSE ASKED WHY DADDY DIDN'T MOVE

Rose met with a child therapist.

Not because Claire wanted a case.

Because Rose woke crying three nights in a row.

One evening, she asked:

“Why didn’t Daddy move?”

Claire sat beside her bed.

“What do you mean?”

“When Grandma hit me.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

Rose continued.

“He was right there.”

There was no legal answer.

No adult answer.

Only truth.

“He should have moved.”

“Did he want her to hit me?”

“No.”

Claire believed that.

“Then why didn’t he stop her?”

Claire looked down.

“Because sometimes adults are afraid to stand against their own family.”

Rose frowned.

“But I’m his family.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

That sentence ended the marriage more completely than any filing.
