Chapter 6 - EVELYN'S REAL FEAR

Evelyn was not only protecting Beth.

She was protecting herself.

For six years, she had lived in the west wing rent-free.

Private suite.

Driver.

Household staff.

Travel charged through David’s family account.

Claire tolerated it because Evelyn was Rose’s grandmother.

Then Claire discovered something.

Evelyn had borrowed $600,000 using a personal guarantee tied to a luxury condo development.

The investment collapsed.

The lender wanted repayment.

If Claire ever removed Evelyn from the mansion, Evelyn would lose the appearance of wealth that helped her keep creditors calm.

The postnup would have given her permanent occupancy.

That was why she wanted Claire to sign.

That was why she called Rose “undisciplined.”

Because Claire’s daughter represented the future owner.

The child Evelyn slapped would eventually inherit the house Evelyn wanted to secure for herself.

The betrayal became almost elegant in its ugliness.
