Chapter 1 - THE COUCH

Sarah Bennett knew she should not have come.

Patrick had told her in the car.

“You’re exhausted.”

“I know.”

“You’re thirty-four weeks pregnant.”

“I know.”

But Beatrice had called the evening “important family business,” which usually meant attendance was mandatory without anyone admitting it.

Inside the Bennett mansion, Sarah realized it was barely a family event. Relatives mingled with directors, lenders’ spouses, and people tied to Bennett Heritage Properties.

Sarah lowered herself onto a velvet couch near the fireplace.

Her back hurt.

Patrick handed her water.

Then Beatrice crossed the room.

“Get up. Give your sister the seat.”

Sarah looked around.

Four chairs were empty.

“I’m eight months pregnant.”

Jade, still swollen from cosmetic surgery, rolled her eyes.

“I just had surgery.”

“You can sit there.”

Sarah pointed to an armchair two feet away.

Beatrice’s face hardened.

“Do not embarrass me.”

Sarah was suddenly too tired to surrender another inch.

“No.”

Richard heard.

He came across the room immediately.

“Your mother told you to move.”

Patrick stepped closer.

“Richard, there are empty chairs everywhere.”

Richard grabbed the shoulder of Sarah’s white dress.

“Dad, stop.”

Patrick moved.

“Don’t touch her.”

Richard pulled Sarah up.

She tried to twist free.

Then his hand struck her shoulder and chest in a violent shove.

Sarah stepped backward.

Her heel found nothing.

“Patrick!”

She fell down the granite staircase.

At the bottom, pain exploded through her side and abdomen.

“My baby!”

Patrick ran to her.

“Call 911!”

Beatrice stood above them.

“Stop faking it!”

Guests stared.

Richard pointed down.

“She threw herself down!”

Sarah barely heard the words through another wave of abdominal pain.

But she understood one thing clearly.

Her father was already creating a version of what happened.

Before anyone knew whether his granddaughter was alive.

Patrick looked up the staircase and saw three board members among the guests.

That suddenly mattered.

Beatrice had not chosen a private dinner. She had filled the room with people whose future testimony could affect Sarah’s business credibility.

Sarah realized the humiliation had an audience by design.

Then another contraction seized her.

Patrick bent over her.

“Stay with me.”

Sarah gripped his sleeve.

“Don’t let them say I was crazy.”

May you like

The ambulance doors opened.

And as paramedics lifted her away, Beatrice was already whispering to Richard at the top of the stairs.
