Chapter 9 - THE SMALLER FIGHT
Emma’s setback lasted six hours.
For six hours, no trust clause, lender, board vote, or family accusation mattered.
Sarah sat beside the incubator.
Patrick held her shoulder.
Finally the neonatologist said:
“She’s stable again.”
Sarah folded into Patrick and cried.
“I’m tired of everyone saying I’m strong.”
Patrick went quiet.
He understood.
Strength had become the excuse everyone used to load more onto her.
“Then don’t be strong tonight,” he said.
The next morning Rachel came only after Sarah asked.
The lender had approved the clean refinancing.
Independent disbursement monitor.
Related-party vendors removed.
External financial oversight.
The Grand Monarch would continue.
Then police obtained a private binder from Richard’s study through proper procedure after Jade told investigators where it was kept.
Inside were project contingencies, vendor summaries, and succession scenarios.
One handwritten line read:
If Sarah delivers early or is unavailable, activate Beatrice immediately. Do not lose closing window.
Another page:
Need public record of Sarah being emotional / unreasonable before trust review.
The trap at the party was now documented.
Not the shove.
The pressure campaign.
Jade stared at the pages and whispered:
“I really thought it was about the seat.”
Sarah looked at her.
“It never was.”
Then police found another note.
Beatrice:
Sarah refuses when she feels watched. Make the refusal costly.
Sarah felt cold.
Their family had spent years learning her behavior.
Not to love her better.
To pressure her more efficiently.
Patrick looked through the binder with Rachel.
There were columns for likely objections, emotional triggers, and board reactions.
One note beside Sarah’s name read:
Responds badly to public pressure but usually concedes later to protect employees.
Sarah read it twice.
Richard had mistaken compassion for predictability.
That explained why he had been so certain she would eventually sign.
