Chapter 6 - THE QUESTION RICHARD ASKED FIRST
Richard had a defense.
Sarah’s due date overlapped the refinancing deadline. He needed to know whether maternity leave could interrupt a necessary vote.
That explanation was plausible.
Sarah refused to exaggerate.
Instead, she demanded every communication with trust counsel.
One email mattered.
Richard to Beatrice:
If Sarah goes offline medically, your consent cures the problem. Make sure counsel has the mechanics ready.
Beatrice:
She won’t go offline willingly.
Richard:
We don’t need willing. We need qualifying.
Not proof they planned an injury.
Proof they viewed medical vulnerability as opportunity.
Then the construction review returned.
Some overruns were legitimate.
Labor, materials, and structural discoveries had all become more expensive.
But related-party contracts appeared inflated by roughly $2.7 million.
Richard argued those vendors were fast and reliable.
Sometimes true.
The problem was pricing and disclosure.
Sarah proposed a clean refinancing:
Same hotel.
Same general loan size.
Independent disbursement control.
Outside cost monitor.
Removal of conflicted vendors.
No transfer of voting authority to Beatrice.
The lender said it would consider the structure.
For the first time, the Grand Monarch no longer depended on Richard’s version of rescue.
Then police interviewed guests.
One remembered that after Sarah fell, before the ambulance arrived, Beatrice told Richard:
“Get her phone.”
Patrick’s face darkened.
Why the phone?
Because Sarah’s trust used phone-based authentication.
Hospital security then produced another report.
Beatrice had arrived twenty minutes after Sarah and repeatedly asked whether staff could release Sarah’s phone and handbag to family.
The nurse refused.
Sarah stared at the page.
They had not stopped when she hit the stairs.
They had followed the opportunity all the way to the hospital.
Rachel recommended Sarah change every password, revoke old device permissions, and notify the trustee that no electronic approval from prior devices should be honored.
Patrick handled it while Sarah remained with Emma.
One old tablet at the Bennett mansion still had partial access to Sarah’s family-document portal.
It could not cast a vote.
But it could download notices, drafts, and trustee communications.
Sarah revoked it.
