Chapter 10 - THE BLACK BINDER
The black binder did not prove attempted murder.
Sarah insisted everyone say that clearly.
It proved something else:
Richard and Beatrice wanted Sarah discredited.
They intended to exploit medical absence.
They coordinated the financing around successor power.
They concealed vendor conflicts.
Richard’s lawyer argued that contingency planning was normal.
Pregnancy could affect availability.
Family enterprises needed backups.
All true.
Then the staircase videos, failed portal logins, and related-party payments sat beside that explanation.
Context changed everything.
The board placed Richard on leave.
Beatrice requested a meeting with Sarah.
Only with Rachel present.
Beatrice arrived perfectly dressed.
“You’ve destroyed this family.”
Sarah almost smiled.
“Interesting opening.”
“You turned Jade against us.”
“No. You used her.”
“She is weak.”
There it was.
Jade was weak, so she deserved rescue.
Sarah was strong, so she deserved use.
Sarah asked:
“Why did you tell Jade to provoke me?”
Beatrice hesitated.
“Because you only listen when consequences become visible.”
“You wanted witnesses.”
“I wanted people to see how unreasonable you had become.”
“And after Dad pushed me?”
“He lost control.”
“Then you called me fake.”
“I was angry.”
“Then you tried to get my phone.”
Beatrice’s eyes changed.
“I wanted to know what you had signed.”
Admission.
Not everything.
Enough.
Rachel ended the meeting.
Later, the forensic audit reached preliminary totals.
Unsupported or conflicted expenditures tied to Richard, Beatrice, Connor, and Jade:
Approximately $3.8 million.
Most appeared recoverable.
The Bennetts had not emptied the company.
They had simply stopped distinguishing family convenience from corporate money.
And now every blurred line had become evidence.
Beatrice’s lawyer tried to negotiate privately.
Repay some disputed charges.
Withdraw the wellness company from Bennett Heritage.
End the trust fight.
In return, Sarah would stop describing the family’s conduct as coordinated.
Sarah refused.
Not because she needed harsher punishment.
Because coordination was exactly what the documents showed.
She would compromise on money.
