Chapter 4 - WHAT OLIVIA APPROVED
Olivia remembered the meeting.
Barely.
Six months earlier.
She had been tired.
They were losing audience.
Recipe videos were down.
Food media had shifted toward personality, conflict, and livestreaming.
Maven presented “The Carter Contrast.”
At the time, Olivia laughed.
Vanessa is control.
Olivia is indulgence.
It sounded playful.
They had always joked about it.
Vanessa arranged parsley with tweezers.
Olivia ate standing over the sink.
Vanessa measured portions.
Olivia cooked by smell.
The contrast was real.
Olivia approved using that difference in marketing.
Then she found the slide she had missed.
Under:
CONTENT OPPORTUNITIES
the deck proposed:
live appetite contrast,
discipline vs indulgence banter,
wardrobe contrast,
reaction capture,
“real sister friction.”
Olivia had initialed the final approval page without reading every appendix.
She hated that.
But Vanessa said:
“You see?”
Olivia looked at her.
“Careful.”
“I’m not saying you approved what happened.”
“Good.”
“I’m saying this didn’t start with me secretly deciding your body was content.”
Olivia’s anger shifted.
Not away from Vanessa.
Toward the system they had both allowed.
Then Olivia asked for all versions of the deck.
The first draft from Maven was more aggressive.
It said:
PLUS-SIZE RELATABILITY.
Vanessa had commented:
NO. Do not reduce Olivia to weight.
Olivia stared.
“You rejected that?”
“Yes.”
Another comment:
KEEP BODY DIFFERENCE VISUAL, NOT EXPLICIT.
Olivia looked up.
“That’s not better.”
“I thought it was.”
“Why?”
“Because viewers already saw our bodies. I didn’t want copy calling you the fat sister.”
The bluntness landed hard.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I was trying to stop them from humiliating you.”
“And then you kept the visual humiliation because it performed.”
Vanessa had no answer.
Then Jonah revealed a contract change Olivia had never seen.
Three months earlier, HearthPeak asked Carter Table to deliver:
“unscripted reactive dining.”
Vanessa signed the amendment as CEO.
Olivia was co-founder and chief creative officer.
Did the amendment require her signature?
No.
Their operating agreement gave Vanessa authority over commercial deals below a certain annual threshold.
The HearthPeak amendment fell below it.
Legal.
Still consequential.
Then Olivia asked:
“What does unscripted reactive dining mean?”
Jonah answered:
“Meals where conversation and spontaneous reactions matter more than recipes.”
“Was I required to participate?”
“No.”
“Then why was I always there?”
Vanessa said:
“Because the audience wants both of us.”
Olivia heard the word wants.
Not needs.
Not contractually requires.
Then she found the cast schedule for the next stream.
Guest host contingency:
If Olivia unavailable, Vanessa to perform solo with archived reaction inserts.
Olivia froze.
“Archived reaction inserts?”
Jonah looked uncomfortable.
They had created a library of Olivia’s facial reactions to reuse during promotional editing.
Some came from ordinary shoots.
Some did not.
