Chapter 6 - WHY VANESSA SAVED IT

Vanessa admitted saving the master footage.

She denied intending to publish Olivia’s collapse.

“Then why preserve it?”

“Because if there was a lawsuit or medical claim, we needed the original.”

That was plausible.

Jonah confirmed their standard practice was to preserve raw footage after any incident.

Then Olivia asked:

“Why say everything?”

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“Because I didn’t want some editor deciding what mattered.”

Again, not as simple as Olivia wanted.

Then Melissa examined file access.

After preservation:

legal copied it,

insurance copied it,

platform trust team requested it.

Then a junior editor, Scott Phelps, exported a ninety-second clip.

Who instructed him?

Slack message:

Need clean version of spike segment for sponsor review.

Sender:

Jonah.

Olivia turned.

Jonah looked pale.

“I sent that.”

“Why?”

“HearthPeak asked why the stream had abnormal retention.”

“You sent my collapse.”

“I sent the relevant segment.”

“You could have sent numbers.”

“They asked for context.”

“Did you ask me?”

“No.”

That shifted blame again.

Vanessa had behaved cruelly in the room.

Jonah converted the moment into sponsor material.

Maven labeled it valuable.

HearthPeak saw performance.

No single decision created the entire exploitation.

Then the sponsor review became important.

HearthPeak’s brand-safety lead, Aisha Monroe, responded:

Do not boost distress segment without participant confirmation.

Good.

Then fifteen minutes later, Jonah replied:

Participant is company principal and content rights are cleared.

Olivia stared.

“Why did you say that?”

Jonah swallowed.

“Because Vanessa told me legal rights were cleared.”

Vanessa said:

“I meant the release.”

Aisha then wrote:

Rights are not the only issue. Confirm participant is comfortable.

No reply.

Yet the clip was boosted the next morning.

Who approved?

HearthPeak system logs showed:

CARTER TABLE ADMIN — VCARTER.

Vanessa.

She had clicked:

Approve Promotion.

Vanessa cried.

“I did.”

Olivia stared.

“After they asked whether I was comfortable.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ask me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Vanessa said:

“Because I knew you would say no.”

Silence.

That was the cleanest answer yet.

Then Olivia asked:

“So why do it?”

Vanessa looked toward the hospital window.

“Because if we missed the campaign, I thought we’d lose the company.”

Olivia frowned.

“We would owe a make-good. We weren’t bankrupt.”

Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t know the full cash position.”

Olivia went cold.

Carter Table’s finances were worse than she knew.
