Chapter 1 - THE INVITATION SHE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO SEE

Claire Whitmore learned about her husband’s wedding from a florist.

The email arrived at 6:12 on a Tuesday morning.

SUBJECT: FINAL APPROVAL - WHITMORE CHAPEL FLORAL INSTALLATION

Claire almost deleted it.

Then she saw the location.

Kailani Point.

Private chapel.

Whitmore Coastal Resorts.

Hawaii.

Her family chapel.

She opened the attachment.

White orchids.

Ivory roses.

Two names printed in the internal planning notes.

ETHAN + NATALIE.

Claire stared.

Her husband.

Her sister.

The date was Saturday.

Four days away.

The divorce was not final.

Technically, the ceremony could not create a legal marriage.

But the insult did not care about technicality.

Claire sat at the kitchen table of the Chicago townhouse her mother left her and read every line.

Private villa reserved for couple.

Family pearl necklace requested from estate wardrobe.

Claire stopped breathing.

No.

She called the Hawaii property manager.

“Paul.”

“Ms. Whitmore?”

“Who authorized access to my mother’s jewelry archive?”

Silence.

Then:

“Mr. Ethan did.”

“On what authority?”

“He said it was for a family ceremony.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Of course.

Ethan still had executive access.

Still chaired operations.

Still carried Whitmore credentials.

For ten years, Claire had let him become the face of a company she technically controlled.

That had once felt like trust.

Now it felt like finding out someone else had learned the combination to every door.

Her phone buzzed.

Natalie.

Claire stared at the name.

Then answered.

“Hey.”

Natalie sounded too cheerful.

“Hi.”

“What do you want?”

A pause.

Then:

“I wanted you to hear it from me.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Hear what?”

“Ethan and I are together.”

Together.

What a small word.

Claire looked at the wedding plan.

“How long?”

Natalie hesitated.

“Six months.”

Six.

Claire closed her eyes.

Six months of Christmas dinner.

Family charity board meetings.

Natalie hugging Claire after the divorce filing.

Natalie saying:

You deserve better.

Claire whispered:

“You’re marrying him Saturday.”

Silence.

Then Natalie:

“How do you know?”

There.

Not denial.

Claire hung up.

She called her attorney.

“Rachel?”

“Yes?”

“I need every asset map updated by tonight.”

Rachel paused.

“What happened?”

Claire looked at the floral plan.

“My sister stole my husband.”

Rachel was silent.

May you like

Then Claire smiled coldly.

“I’m going to let her keep him.”
