Chapter 3 - THE THING ETHAN THOUGHT HE OWNED

The folder did not say Ethan owned nothing.

That would have been easy.

It said something worse.

He did not own what he thought he owned.

The Hawaii villa belonged to the Margaret Whitmore Family Trust.

Claire was beneficiary and controlling trustee.

The Chicago townhouse was inherited separately.

The resort company shares Claire owned before marriage remained separate property under their prenup.

Ethan had management authority.

Not title.

His access to the villa existed through Whitmore Coastal.

That authority ended Friday at 5:00 p.m.

The injunction froze disputed transfers.

The hotel staff were not stealing his luggage.

They were moving it to a regular guest suite he could pay for himself.

Natalie looked at Ethan.

“You said the villa was yours.”

“It is part of the company.”

Claire answered:

“No. It’s leased to the company from my trust.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Temporary paperwork does not decide a divorce.”

Good.

Smart.

Claire almost respected the recovery.

He continued.

“I increased the value of Whitmore assets for a decade.”

“Then prove what you earned.”

“I will.”

Natalie looked between them.

“And the Chicago house?”

Claire looked at her.

“Mine.”

“The cars?”

“One marital. One company.”

“The investment account?”

“Depends which one.”

Natalie stared at Ethan.

He had described Claire’s world as if he were handing it over room by room.

Now every room had paperwork.

Ethan stepped closer to Claire.

“You think this is clever.”

“No.”

“You embarrassed me at my wedding.”

Claire laughed.

“You’re married to me.”

The room went silent.

Natalie’s face turned red.

The Hawaii ceremony had been symbolic.

Ethan planned to legalize the marriage after divorce.

Claire looked at the white dress.

“Congratulations on the rehearsal.”

Natalie slapped her.

Claire’s head turned.

Ethan grabbed Natalie.

“Stop.”

Claire looked back slowly.

Then smiled.

“Good.”

Natalie froze.

“Do that again in front of forty witnesses.”

For once, Natalie stepped back.
