Chapter 6 - THE PEARLS

The pearls were worth less than the fight over them.
Financially.
Emotionally, they were priceless.
Margaret had worn them at Claire’s wedding.
Before dying, she left jewelry under a family estate memorandum.
The pearls to Claire.
A sapphire ring to Natalie.
Natalie hated the ring.
She wanted the pearls because they meant eldest daughter.
Chosen daughter.
The real Whitmore daughter.
Claire finally understood why Natalie wore them to the chapel.
Not because Ethan gave them.
Because Natalie wanted to be photographed in Claire’s place.
The estate manager confirmed Ethan removed the pearls from secure storage.
He used his old company authority.
No theft charge yet.
But another example of access becoming ownership in his mind.
Ethan defended it:
“Natalie is family.”
Claire answered:
“So am I.”
Then Jonathan Sloane entered the case.
Family attorney.
Calm.
Expensive.
Dangerous.
He claimed Claire verbally approved a long-term plan to reorganize Whitmore ownership.
He produced emails.
Let’s simplify everything after Mom’s estate closes.
I trust Ethan to make the structure work.
Real emails.
Claire stared.
“I meant administrative structure.”
Jonathan smiled faintly.
“That is your interpretation now.”

Rachel hated him immediately.
Smart people were always more exhausting.
