Chapter 2 - THE CHAPEL DOORS

Saturday morning was painfully beautiful.
Blue water.
White clouds.
Warm wind moving through palms.
The Whitmore private chapel sat above the cliffs, hidden from the main resort behind gardens Claire’s mother planted twenty years earlier.
Claire arrived in white linen pants and a long beach coat.
No invitation.
No hesitation.
She heard music inside.
Then Natalie laughing.
Claire kicked the chapel doors open.
Every head turned.
Ethan stood at the altar holding Natalie tightly.
Natalie wore an elegant white wedding dress.
And around her neck:
Margaret Whitmore’s pearls.
Claire saw nothing else.
She crossed the aisle.
Natalie stepped back.
“Claire—”
Claire grabbed the pearls and ripped them away.
The clasp broke.
Natalie shrieked.
“THOSE ARE MY MOTHER’S!”
Pearls spilled partly across Claire’s hand.
Ethan stepped between them.
“IT’S OVER, CLAIRE!”
Natalie grabbed his arm.
Then laughed.
“He chose me.”
Claire stared through furious tears.
Natalie stepped closer.
“I get Ethan.”
Her smile widened.
“And I get the life you couldn’t keep.”
Ethan smirked.
That did it.
Claire stopped crying.
Then she began laughing.
Not because anything was funny.
Because suddenly she understood exactly what they believed.
Claire reached into her bag.
Pulled out a thick legal folder.
Threw it against Ethan’s chest.
He caught it awkwardly.
“What is this?”
Claire smiled.
“Your honeymoon reading.”
Ethan opened the folder.
His face drained.
Natalie grabbed several pages.
Her smile disappeared.
Outside, resort staff began rolling luggage away from the private villa.
Natalie stared through the chapel windows.
“ETHAN?!”
Claire stepped toward them.
“Fine.”
She pointed at Ethan.
“He’s yours.”
Then toward the villa.
“But the house—and everything you thought was his—is mine.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What did you do?”
Claire smiled.
“No.”
She took the pearls from Natalie’s shaking hand.
May you like
“What did you do?”
And for the first time, Ethan looked afraid.
