Madison requested a meeting with Claire.
Claire almost refused.
Then accepted.
Public café.
Lawyers aware.
No drama.
Madison arrived without red dress armor.

She said:

“Which part?”
“The money.”
“Did you know he was married?”
Madison looked down.

Then handed Claire a flash drive.
Messages from Ethan.
Some personal.
Some financial.
One:
Once Mom signs the restructuring, I control enough that Claire can’t touch anything.
Another:
She’ll take the settlement. She doesn’t have the stomach for a war.
Claire read it twice.
Then:
Madison had asked:
What if she fights?
Ethan:
She won’t. She needs people to like her.
Claire almost smiled.
He had mistaken restraint for weakness.
Then another message:
Mom always caves when I push hard enough.
Evelyn was wrong about one thing.
Ethan had not only expected his mother to protect him.
He expected her to surrender.
Then Madison said:
“He told me you never worked.”
Claire looked up.
“What?”
“He said you lived off him.”
Claire laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because she had spent four years helping rebuild Carter Consumer Group’s brand and retail partnerships.
Unpaid consulting at first.
Then underpaid contract work.
Madison’s expression changed.
“He said his family gave you everything.”

“That’s the story he needed you to believe.”
