Chapter 3 - WHAT WAS INSIDE THE FOLDER

The first page was not a gift.
It was a voting resolution.
Claire read the header twice.
CARTER HOLDINGS FAMILY TRUST
SPECIAL DISTRIBUTION AND GOVERNANCE ACTION
Ethan reached again.
Evelyn raised one hand.
“Touch her and you leave.”
He stared at his mother.
“You can’t do this.”
“I already did.”
Claire kept reading.
Ethan’s voting proxy over certain family-controlled entities had been revoked.
Why?
Breach of fiduciary obligations.
Unauthorized personal use of company resources.
Undisclosed related-party transactions.
Then another document.
Temporary management authority over Carter Consumer Group transferred to:
Claire Carter.
Claire looked up.
“No.”
Evelyn met her eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire shook her head.
“I’m not taking his company.”
“It was never his.”
Ethan exploded.
“It was Dad’s!”
Evelyn answered:
“And then mine.”
Silence.
Then:
“And you mistook expectation for ownership.”
That landed.
Madison stood behind her chair clutching a napkin around her hands.
She looked less worried about the hot water now.
More worried about Ethan.
“What did you lose?”
Ethan ignored her.
Claire opened the next page.
A forensic audit.
Expense category:
EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT.
Under it:
hotel suites.
Luxury car lease.
Jewelry.
Travel.
Apartment rent.
Madison’s apartment.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“You charged her life to the company?”
Ethan said:
“Those were business development expenses.”
Madison looked shocked.
“You said you paid for that.”
He turned.
“Not now.”
Evelyn smiled without warmth.
“That’s the first honest thing he’s said tonight.”
Then Claire saw a number.
$684,300.
That much had been classified as questionable or unsupported spending over eighteen months.
Not all necessarily theft.
But enough to trigger review.
Then a final page in the first section.
Ethan had submitted a draft postnuptial agreement.
Claire had never seen it.
The agreement would classify:
the marital home,
certain investment accounts,
future trust distributions,
and all appreciation tied to Carter assets
as Ethan’s separate property.
Claire stared.
“He was going to make me sign this?”
Evelyn answered:
“He was going to try.”
Then Madison whispered:
“Ethan told me Claire already agreed to leave.”
Claire looked at her.
“No.”
Madison looked at Ethan.

For the first time, the mistress was not mocking the wife.
She was recalculating the man.
