Chapter 14 - MADISON STAYS

Madison did something no one expected.
She stayed with Ethan.
For a while.
Not because love conquered money.
Because humiliation made her defensive.
Everyone assumed she would leave.
So she stayed to prove them wrong.
Three months.
Then six.
Ethan moved into a smaller luxury apartment paid from personal funds.
Still comfortable.
Just not Carter-family fantasy.
Madison worked.
Paid part of rent.
They fought.
Money changed tone.
When Ethan bought an expensive watch, Madison asked:
“Can you afford that?”
He exploded.
Same pattern.
Not violence.
Entitlement.
Then one night Madison realized Claire had not been a freeloader.
Claire had been the adult in the room.
Madison left.
No reconciliation with Claire.
No friendship.
She simply left Ethan.
Later she sent Claire one message:
You were right about him.
Claire deleted it.
She did not need to win the mistress too.
Then Madison sent Evelyn a letter.
Handwritten.
No demand.
No apology that expected forgiveness.
Just:
I thought being chosen by Ethan meant I had won something.
Evelyn read it.
Then put it away.

No response.
Some lessons do not need a relationship afterward.
