Chapter 1 - CANCEL EVERYTHING

Madison Caldwell crossed the ballroom before Emily Davis understood she was angry.
The bride’s white gown moved like a weapon.
Madison grabbed Emily’s upper arm.
Shoved her backward.
Then slapped her across the face.
“Look at you—you don’t even belong at a wedding like this!”
Two hundred guests went quiet.
Emily caught herself against a cocktail table.
Her cream dress was simple.
No crystals.
No designer label anyone would recognize.
That had been deliberate.
This was Madison’s day.
Or Emily had believed it was.
Madison grabbed her shoulder again.
“Get out! You’re embarrassing my whole wedding!”
Behind her, Diane Caldwell smiled.
Emily’s stepmother.
Madison’s mother.
The woman Emily had spent fifteen years trying not to fight.
Emily looked toward Blake.
Her husband stood beside the family table.
Dark suit.
Wedding ring.
Still.
He did not move.
Did not say:
Enough.
Did not ask whether Emily was hurt.
He looked at her with the familiar expression that meant:
Please don’t make this worse.
Something inside Emily became quiet.
She walked through the ballroom doors.
Stopped.
Then turned back.
Madison was smiling again.
Diane looked victorious.
Blake looked relieved.
Emily took out her phone.
Called one number.
“Cancel the wedding. Everything.”
Madison’s smile disappeared.
Emily lowered the phone.
Diane stormed toward her.
“You better fix this right now!”
Emily said nothing.
The ballroom doors opened behind her.
Four men in black suits entered.
Not private soldiers.
Venue security.
With them came the hotel’s event director, Martin Shaw, carrying a contract folder.
Guests turned.
Madison backed away.
Martin stopped in front of her.
“This reception is terminated under the event contract. Everyone needs to leave the ballroom.”
Madison stared at him.
Then at Emily.
“What?”
Emily finally spoke.
“The services I contracted are canceled.”
Madison’s face twisted.
“You can’t cancel my wedding.”
“No.”
Emily looked around the ballroom.
May you like
“But I can cancel what I paid for.”
And that was when everyone learned whose name had been underneath the flowers, champagne, ballroom, band, lighting, tables, cake, and dinner they had spent months calling the Caldwell wedding.
