Chapter 5 - THE FIRST HUMILIATION
The slap was not the first incident.
At the bridal shower, Madison assigned Emily to refill drinks while the bridal party played games.
Emily asked:
“Am I helping or attending?”
Madison laughed.
“Both.”
Diane said:
“You’re so good at this stuff.”
At the dress fitting, Madison told the seamstress:
“Emily doesn’t understand fashion.”
Emily said nothing.
At the rehearsal, Madison moved Emily from the immediate-family row to the second row.
Reason:
“Symmetry.”
Emily accepted it.
Then Noah’s mother quietly asked:
“Why isn’t your sister sitting with family?”
Madison answered:
“She prefers not to be involved.”
Emily heard that too.
Still said nothing.
Blake heard it.
Still said nothing.
Later in the hotel room, Emily asked him:
“Why didn’t you correct her?”
Blake removed his tie.
“Because we’re twelve hours from the wedding.”
“So?”
“Do you really want to blow this up now?”
There it was again.
Not:
She’s wrong.
Not:
I’ll talk to her.
Only:
Not now.
The bartender incident mattered more than Madison realized.
Two hours before the ceremony, Diane demanded the premium champagne package be opened early for a private bridal-room toast.
The hotel manager refused because the package began at cocktail hour under the contract.
Diane said:
“We paid enough.”
The manager answered:
“The contracting guest approved the schedule.”
Diane snapped:
“She is not the bride.”
“Correct.”
“Then why does she control it?”
Because Emily’s signature was on the contract.
A staff member later documented the exchange.
Diane had already been warned:
Any further aggressive conduct toward employees or guests could trigger removal.
