Chapter 3 - THE SECRET EVERYONE KNEW EXCEPT THE GUESTS
Emily never asked for public credit.
She specifically said:
“Don’t announce what I paid.”
Madison heard something different.
She heard:
Emily doesn’t want anyone to know because she’s embarrassed she had to rescue us.
Diane heard:
We can preserve appearances.
So the story changed.
At bridal showers, Diane said:
“We’re giving Madison the wedding she deserves.”
At the rehearsal dinner:
“The Caldwell women pulled this together.”
When someone praised the flowers, Madison said:
“Mom went insane with the budget.”
Emily heard.
Said nothing.
Blake noticed.
After one dinner he asked:
“Does that bother you?”
“A little.”
“Then say something.”
Emily shook her head.
“It’ll sound petty.”
Blake kissed her forehead.
“You’re a better person than me.”
At the time, Emily thought that was praise.
