Chapter 6 - WHY BLAKE STAYED STILL
Blake’s silence in the ballroom was not because he wanted Emily humiliated.
That would have been simpler.
He froze because he had spent seven years managing the Caldwell family by de-escalation.
Diane complained.
Blake redirected.
Madison insulted Emily.
Blake made a joke.
Emily got angry.
Blake said:
“Don’t give them the reaction.”
He believed he was protecting his wife from drama.
Over time, that became something else.
He expected Emily to absorb disrespect because she was the emotionally capable one.
At the ballroom, when Madison slapped her, Blake’s first thought was:
Oh God, not here.
Not:
She hit my wife.
That distinction destroyed Emily’s trust in him.
Later he said:
“I was shocked.”
Emily answered:
“So was I. I still moved.”
He had no response.
Blake knew about that conversation.
Diane told him the morning of the wedding:
“Please keep Emily from discussing money.”
Blake responded:
“She won’t.”
He meant:
Emily has class.
Diane heard:
Blake will manage her.
When Emily learned about that exchange, she was furious.
“You promised them I’d stay quiet?”
“I said you wouldn’t discuss money at the wedding.”
“That wasn’t yours to promise.”
“I knew you wouldn’t.”
“That’s worse.”
Blake finally understood.
He had treated knowledge of Emily as authority over Emily.
