Chapter 11 - THE TRAP

Ethan did not sign.

He called federal investigators.

Vanessa had expected that.

The school photograph was traced to a licensed investigator.

Legal surveillance.

No direct threat.

Again, ambiguity.

Vanessa knew exactly how close to the line she could stand.

Daniel said:

“She wants fear without evidence of extortion.”

Max punched the wall.

Rebecca looked at him with disgust.

“Stop helping her.”

“I’m not.”

“You helped build this machine.”

Max said nothing.

Ethan looked at him.

“What else does she have?”

Max hesitated.

“What?”

“Something she can use against me?”

Max looked at Rebecca.

Then Ethan.

“Yes.”

Ethan waited.

“A recording.”

“Of what?”

“Your father.”

Ethan froze.

Michael Cole had recorded a private conversation before his death.

In it, Michael admitted the pension diversion.

But he also said something else.

He claimed Richard Hale had threatened Ethan as a child.

Ethan stared.

“What?”

Max nodded.

“Your father said that was why he destroyed Richard.”

Ethan remembered nothing.

He had been six.

Daniel searched old police logs.

There was a report.

A suspicious vehicle outside the Cole home.

A note.

No arrest.

Richard denied involvement.

The note read:

YOUR SON PAYS FOR YOUR SINS.

Ethan felt sick.

Two fathers.

Two crimes.

Two families teaching children to inherit hatred.

Vanessa had grown up hearing her father was ruined by Michael.

Ethan had grown up never knowing Richard may have threatened him.

The symmetry was almost cruel.

Rebecca asked:

“Where’s the recording?”

Max looked at Ethan.

“Vanessa has it.”

“Why hasn’t she released it?”

“Because it also incriminates Richard.”

Ethan understood.

Vanessa needed the truth selectively.

The same mistake his father made.

That gave Ethan an idea.

He called Vanessa.

“I’ll sign.”

Everyone stared at him.

Vanessa was silent.

Then:

“Thirty percent?”

“Yes.”

“And the Hale assets.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

After the call, Daniel said:

“You’re not giving her anything.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at Max.

“We make her bring the recording.”

Max frowned.

“She won’t.”

“She will if she thinks it protects her father.”

Rebecca understood.

“You’re going to make the recording part of the settlement.”

Ethan nodded.

May you like

He planned one final negotiation.

And Vanessa, convinced she had finally broken him, accepted.
