Chapter 8 - THE MARRIAGE BEFORE THE MARRIAGE
Ethan remembered meeting Vanessa at a fundraiser eleven years earlier.
She had spilled champagne on his jacket.
She laughed.
He laughed.
They talked for three hours.
He had believed in coincidence.
Now he was not sure.
Daniel hired a genealogy researcher and corporate investigator.
The results came quickly.
Vanessa’s father had lost nearly everything after Michael Cole testified in a federal fraud case.
Richard avoided prison.
But the Hale family business collapsed.
Their home was sold.
Vanessa was seventeen.
She watched her mother leave.
Her father became obsessed with the Coles.
Ethan stared at old photographs.
Vanessa had grown up inside a story where his family was the enemy.
Rebecca sat across from him.
“You think she married you for revenge?”
“I don’t know.”
Max looked sick.
“She talked about your father.”
Ethan turned.
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“What did she say?”
“That Michael Cole destroyed her family and died before she could make him pay.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
His father had died six years before Ethan met Vanessa.
Max continued.
“She said the son inherited the debt.”
Rebecca whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Ethan felt grief unlike heartbreak.
If Vanessa had chosen him as a target from the beginning, what had been real?
The wedding?
The first apartment?
The nights they stayed awake planning Cole Development?
The miscarriage they endured together?
He remembered Vanessa crying in his arms.
Could someone fake that?
Daniel answered the unspoken question.
“People can begin with one motive and develop another.”
Ethan looked at him.
“She may have loved you.”
“That’s supposed to help?”
“No. It makes her more complicated.”
That evening, Ethan returned to the old house to collect clothes under court supervision.
Vanessa was there.
She watched the officer from the hallway.
When they were briefly alone, Ethan said:
“You knew who I was before we met.”
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
“So?”
“You targeted me.”
She smiled faintly.
“At first.”
The answer hurt more than denial.
Ethan asked:
“And later?”
Vanessa looked away.
For one second, she seemed tired.
Human.
Then the mask returned.
“Later you became exactly what your father was.”
“What?”
“A man who thinks being calm makes him morally superior.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You tried to take the company because of him.”
“Not just because of him.”
“Then why?”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Because your father destroyed mine.”
“Your father committed fraud.”
Her face hardened.
“So did yours.”
Ethan froze.
Vanessa smiled.
“You really don’t know, do you?”
“Know what?”
She leaned close.
“Your father didn’t expose Richard because he was honest.”
