Chapter 13 - THE REVENGE SHE SAVED

The USB was authentic.
But incomplete.
Vanessa had removed seventeen minutes.
Daniel’s forensic analyst recovered fragments.
A name appeared repeatedly.
Laura Bennett.
Ethan did not recognize it.
Rebecca did.
“She was Vanessa’s college roommate.”
They found Laura in Maine.
At first, she refused to speak.
Then Ethan mentioned the miscarriage.
Laura went silent.
“What do you know?”
Laura asked:
“Did Vanessa tell you she lost the baby naturally?”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“What are you saying?”
Laura cried.
Vanessa had called her the night before the miscarriage.
She had discovered something in Ethan’s office.
A memorandum showing Michael intended to cut Vanessa out of future family voting rights if Ethan died.
She was furious.
She felt trapped.
Then she said she was thinking about ending the pregnancy.
Ethan stared.
“No.”
Laura continued.
“I begged her not to do anything alone.”
“What happened?”
“She called the next day from the hospital.”
Ethan could barely breathe.
“Did she terminate?”
“I don’t know.”
Laura shook her head.
“She said she changed her mind. She said the bleeding started before she did anything.”
Ethan felt the world shift.
For years, he carried guilt.
Vanessa had allowed him to.
Maybe used it.
He returned home and found an envelope beneath his door.
No stamp.
Inside:
A copy of a medical record.
Vanessa had visited a private clinic two days before the miscarriage.
Consultation only.
No procedure.
At the bottom, handwritten:
I KNOW WHAT YOU THINK NOW.
Ethan understood.
Vanessa had sent it.
She wanted him suspicious.
Wanted him to suffer uncertainty.
She was no longer fighting only for money.
She was retaliating emotionally.
That night, she called.
“Did you enjoy the record?”
Ethan said nothing.
She laughed.
“You always need proof.”
“Did you intend to end the pregnancy?”
Silence.
Then:
“For one hour.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because then you would have made my pain about your forgiveness.”
“That’s not fair.”
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“Neither was sitting alone in an emergency room while you held your father’s hand.”
Ethan whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.
Then she said:
“Sorry is what people say when consequences belong to someone else.”
She hung up.
The next morning, police called Ethan.

Max Turner had disappeared.
And in his abandoned car, they found Ethan’s divorce attorney’s business card covered in blood.
