Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WITH A PLAN

By morning, Vanessa had transformed.
The screaming woman in the red dress vanished.
In her place stood someone organized.
Calm.
Strategic.
She called her attorney before sunrise.
She froze the corporate operating account.
She claimed Ethan had threatened her.
She sent photographs of Rebecca inside the house to a friend who worked for a local gossip site.
By 9 a.m., the narrative was forming.
Jealous husband.
Unstable mistress’s wife.
Domestic confrontation.
Vanessa as the woman caught between two volatile people.
Ethan watched it happen almost with admiration.
“She’s good,” Rebecca said.
They sat in Ethan’s attorney’s office.
His lawyer, Daniel Mercer, agreed.
“She’s been preparing.”
“How long?”
Daniel opened a folder.
“At least eight months.”
Ethan stared.
Vanessa had copied internal records.
Transferred portions of her compensation into separate trusts.
Documented arguments.
Saved selected text messages.
Recorded three conversations without telling Ethan.
In every recording, Ethan sounded tired.
Cold.
Sometimes harsh.
Never violent.
But edited excerpts could look bad.
“She’s building coercive-control allegations,” Daniel said.
Rebecca shook her head.
“She cheated and she gets to call him abusive?”
Daniel looked at her.
“She doesn’t need everyone to believe her. She only needs enough doubt to affect a judge.”
Ethan leaned back.
“What does she want?”
Daniel did not hesitate.
“The company.”
That afternoon, Vanessa filed for an emergency temporary restraining order.
She claimed Ethan had trapped her in the house and invited Rebecca over to intimidate her.
Ethan nearly laughed.
Then Daniel showed him the affidavit.
Vanessa had described the night in careful language.
No obvious lies.
Only omissions.
Rebecca arrived “unexpectedly.”
Ethan “allowed her inside.”
Rebecca “advanced aggressively.”
Ethan “made a statement suggesting violence.”
Ethan remembered:
But her? I’m not so sure.
A joke.
A bitter one.
Now evidence.
Daniel looked at him.
“She baited you.”
Ethan understood.
The affair confession.
The insults.
The ring.
Everything had been designed to provoke him into doing something useful.
Something she could record.
“Was the phone call planned too?”
Rebecca looked up.
Max.
RUN NOW.
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
He called Rebecca’s husband.
No answer.
They checked the Turner house.
Empty.
Max’s car was gone.
Rebecca’s laptop was missing.
Then she noticed something worse.
Her passport.
Gone.
Rebecca whispered:
“He took it.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why take your passport?”
She looked at him.
“Because there was something in the safe behind it.”
“What?”
May you like
Rebecca went pale.
“A ledger.”
