Chapter 10 - THE LEDGER BENEATH THE PLAYHOUSE
The childhood photograph revealed another clue. Behind the girls stood a wooden playhouse removed after the fire. Ground-penetrating radar found a metal box beneath its foundation.
Inside was Rebecca’s handwritten ledger.
It recorded forty-three children moved through Family Renewal under false or coerced surrender papers. Wealthy adoptive parents paid “donations” averaging two hundred thousand dollars. William routed the money through foundation construction projects.
Rebecca’s notes began as accounting entries. Later pages became evidence: birth names, biological parents, placements, and warnings that William threatened anyone who resisted.
Emily had discovered the box while playing. Molly Reed, brought to the estate by someone seeking the ledger, hid with her in the guesthouse. Rebecca’s final note from that night read:
W knows Emily saw him with Molly. I have arranged the switch. God forgive me for leaving the other child behind.
Victoria vomited after reading it.
Her father had been at the guesthouse before the fire. Rebecca believed he posed a danger to Emily. She staged her daughter’s death using Molly’s unidentified body, then sent Emily away under Sarah Reed’s name.
But the ledger did not prove William killed Molly or started the fire. The final pages were torn out.
Nathan demanded the document remain confidential until authenticated. Miriam agreed and warned disclosure could expose innocent adoptive families and children.
Charles proposed a court-supervised process protecting identities while preserving evidence.
Victoria supported him.
Nathan smiled without warmth. “Your mother built this foundation. Are you prepared to destroy her legacy because a frightened woman wrote accusations in a notebook?”
Victoria closed the ledger.
