Chapter 16 - THE SILVER THREAD INSIDE THE RIBBON
Rebecca’s photograph showed the ribbons were not identical. Victoria’s had a silver border stitched from left to right. Emily’s mirrored it from right to left.
Textile conservator Dr. Priya Shah examined Victoria’s original. The silver thread was conductive wire wrapped around silk—a technology unusually advanced for 1996 but available to the Hale medical-equipment division.
Inside the knot was half of a miniature data coil.
The ribbon was not merely sentimental. Rebecca had used the pair to divide an encryption key. Neither half could open anything alone.
Grant searched Rebecca’s surviving devices and found an encrypted archive labeled GREENLIGHT. It had been accessed once, two weeks before her death, but not opened.
Nathan filed an emergency claim arguing the archive was foundation property. Elena Ruiz secured it under court control.
Victoria now understood why Rebecca’s will told the sisters never to be separated again. The sentence referred to both daughters and both halves of the evidence.
At the luncheon, Tommy would bring the second ribbon. Sarah wanted Victoria to show the first publicly, proving she was ready to combine the keys.
“Why not deliver it to the court?” Charles asked.
Grant answered, “Because she doesn’t trust the court’s systems. Someone leaked Tommy’s sealed location.”
Victoria considered giving her ribbon to Elena before the event. A message arrived from Sarah through Laura Bennett:
The archive opens only once. If Nathan reaches the second ribbon first, every name inside becomes his weapon.
