Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN VICTORIA HAD BECOME
Public sympathy turned against Victoria because the accusation contained enough truth.
She had gone to Harbor House with security. She had threatened Denise with a subpoena. She had approved extravagant luncheon spending while rejecting basic shelter requests. Former employees described her as cold toward anyone who appeared poor.
Victoria wanted to blame Nathan for the leak. Charles forced her to confront the record instead.
“A false motive does not make every reported action false,” he said.
At a press conference, Victoria admitted the footwear decision and restored emergency funding. She refused to discuss Emily or Tommy.
The apology sounded calculated because part of it was. She regretted the optics before she fully understood the harm.
Denise told her so during a private meeting.
“You keep asking why that boy came looking for you,” she said. “Ask why he expected you to reject him.”
Tommy’s shelter teacher supplied an answer. His mother had rehearsed the encounter with him. She predicted Victoria would notice dirty clothes before his face, wealth before kinship, and public embarrassment before fear.
“She wasn’t teaching him to trick you,” the teacher said. “She was preparing him not to be destroyed if you behaved exactly as she remembered.”
Victoria went home and studied the second photograph. Emily’s face had been removed, but her small hand remained inside Victoria’s.
For years, Victoria had funded charity while preserving distance from the people receiving it. She called it discipline. Perhaps it was inherited fear: William had taught her that vulnerable people were dangerous because their truth could make claims on the family.
