Chapter 17 - THE LAWYER WHO ERASED THE BOX
Elena Ruiz uncovered evidence that Miriam Shaw created the false destruction authorization for Box 17-B.
Miriam admitted the forgery.
Her explanation was not simple loyalty to Nathan. Rebecca had ordered her to remove the box from normal archives because William’s former associates were searching for the adoptees. Miriam digitized the files into the encrypted GREENLIGHT archive, then forged Victoria’s approval to make the paper trail appear routine.
“You used my signature because you thought I was expendable,” Victoria said.
“I used it because your mother said Nathan monitored hers.”
“Why didn’t you tell me after William died?”
Miriam looked ashamed. “Rebecca did not trust you.”
Victoria understood why. At twenty-six, she had defended her father against early questions about Family Renewal. She called complainants opportunists and helped settle Laura Bennett’s first records lawsuit under confidentiality.
Miriam had also made payments to Grant on Rebecca’s behalf. Her secrecy obstructed the current inquiry but preserved evidence William’s network might have destroyed.
Elena offered limited immunity in exchange for the archive architecture and testimony. Miriam accepted.
Nathan responded by releasing emails showing Miriam discussed using the adoptees’ stories to force him off the board. He portrayed the audit as a conspiracy among Rebecca’s loyalists.
The emails were authentic but incomplete. Miriam had indeed considered strategic disclosure, proving even protectors could treat victims as leverage.
Elena removed her from access to the investigation.
