Chapter 12 - THE INVESTIGATOR WHO HAD BEEN PAID TWICE
Grant was arrested for evidence theft and obstruction. He insisted someone planted the ledger, but forensic analysis found his fingerprints on the metal box and office cabinet.
“Of course they’re there,” he said. “I handled both during the investigation.”
More damaging evidence followed. Bank records showed Miriam had paid Grant through a consulting company before Victoria hired him. The first payment dated six months earlier.
Victoria confronted him in the detention interview room.
“Who were you working for?”
“Your mother.”
Rebecca had secretly retained Grant to locate Emily and reconstruct Family Renewal. After Rebecca died, he accepted Victoria’s case without disclosing the prior engagement because Rebecca’s instructions required secrecy until E.H. appeared.
“You lied every day,” Victoria said.
“I withheld the client relationship. I did not steal that ledger.”
Grant revealed Rebecca believed someone inside the foundation monitored her search. She suspected Miriam but lacked proof. Grant had used duplicate evidence files to identify leaks.
The stolen ledger was one such test. Its photographed pages contained a false placement address inserted by Rebecca. The next morning, Nathan’s attorneys filed papers referencing that exact address.
Nathan had accessed the supposedly stolen document before it appeared in Grant’s car.
Police released Grant pending investigation. Nathan’s board allies called the planted detail entrapment and moved to remove Victoria as chair for endangering the foundation.
The vote was scheduled for the morning of the luncheon.
