Chapter 22 - THE TABLES WERE WHITE

The charity luncheon opened under soft afternoon light. White tables filled the plaza. Pearls, champagne glasses, and cream flower arrangements created the polished image Nathan wanted broadcast.

Victoria arrived in a cream designer dress with the original ribbon in her blonde hair.

She no longer had a place at the head table. Nathan seated her near the edge beside minor donors, a deliberate public demotion. Cameras still followed her because scandal had made her more interesting than authority.

Nathan approached before the speeches.

“Give me your ribbon,” he said quietly. “We can open the archive together under privilege and protect the innocent names.”

“Elena controls the archive.”

“Elena will publish enough to destroy every family involved.”

“She has a court order protecting identities.”

“Courts leak.”

Victoria thought of Tommy’s sealed location. Nathan was right about the risk and wrong about who should control it.

She refused.

Security supervisors received photographs of Tommy and Sarah marked as potential electronic thieves. Victoria demanded the alert be withdrawn. Nathan said event safety was now his responsibility.

Laura Bennett and Denise entered as invited shelter representatives. Charles stood near the public sidewalk. Elena’s investigators observed without interfering.

At two fifteen, the traffic light across the street turned green.

A barefoot boy with messy brown hair stepped onto the plaza.

His clothes were dirty and worn. A small shape pressed against the pocket of his oversized jacket.

Two guards began moving toward him.

Victoria stood so quickly her chair struck the table behind her.

Tommy walked directly toward her.
