Chapter 15 - THE ACCOUNT INSIDE THE RING

The fishing house contained no person, only a message.

Dominic had arranged photographs across the upstairs floor: Clara at the diner, Julian at city hall, Maximilian signing the harbor order, Mrs. Gable beside Peter’s grave. In the center lay a recent photograph of Clara sleeping in the protected apartment.

Her location was compromised again.

Federal agents moved her immediately. This time Clara refused to be treated as cargo.

“Tell me the plan before you move me,” she said. “Every secret transfer has led Dominic to us.”

They discovered how. The silver ring emitted a low-energy signal whenever brought near modern security scanners. A microscopic chip was embedded beneath the crest.

Julian had installed it intentionally.

The chip was not a tracker. It was an authentication key. Each time estate, courthouse, hospital, or federal security read it, Dominic’s compromised network logged the location.

Clara had carried both proof and beacon around her neck.

Leah placed the ring in a shielded evidence pouch. Before sealing it, she connected it to an isolated reader. The key opened an escrow account containing the fourteen million Julian was accused of stealing.

No money had been spent. Attached ledgers documented Dominic’s weapons shipments, bribes, Peter’s staged crash, and payments to Julian’s captors.

One transaction was scheduled for midnight: five million dollars to Black Pine Air Charter in exchange for “medical passenger J.R.”

Dominic intended to fly Julian out of the country.

The departure airport was hidden, but the payment required physical authentication from both signet rings. Dominic possessed neither.

Minutes later, he called Clara.

“You opened the escrow.”

“Yes.”

“Then you understand Julian stole from his family.”

“He protected evidence from you.”

Dominic laughed. “Bring the ring to the old Russo airfield. Come alone, and your husband leaves with you.”

“Let me hear him.”

Julian’s voice came faintly. “Clara?”

This time he said her name.

Her knees weakened.

“Do you remember me?”

A long silence.

“I remember being afraid you were dead.”

Dominic ended the call.

The old airfield belonged to a company already seized by federal authorities. It should have been impossible for Dominic to use.

Adrian checked the seizure order.

The property had been quietly released that morning by the same prosecutor supervising Maximilian’s cooperation.

The corruption reached the person who now controlled every rescue plan.
