Chapter 5 - THE CHILD CONCEIVED AFTER A DEATH

Leah obtained the official crash timeline.
The emergency call was logged at 1:14 a.m. A witness saw flames minutes earlier. If Julian reached Clara’s apartment before three, either the timeline was false or the body evidence belonged to someone else.
The ultrasound dates created a second contradiction. Clara conceived approximately four days after the crash.
Maximilian did not ask whether the child was Julian’s. He asked why Clara had hidden inside the one estate most likely to kill her.
“Julian told me the proof was here,” she said. “He said someone moved money through the household accounts because company auditors never reviewed them.”
Before meeting Julian, Clara worked as a junior forensic bookkeeper for a Boston nonprofit. She was not an undercover agent or an heiress. She was a woman who noticed numbers and fell in love with a man who introduced himself as Jules Rossi, a shipping consultant ashamed of his family.
They married quietly at city hall.
Clara removed the chain and placed the ring in Maximilian’s palm. Inside, beneath the wolf crest, was a second engraving:
C + J. No borrowed names.
Maximilian looked away.
His brother had a wife. A child. A life he never trusted Maximilian enough to reveal.
“Why use Jenkins?”
“It is my mother’s name. Dominic knew Clara Russo would be easy to find.”
She had entered the estate two months earlier and copied household ledgers at night. Payments led from Mrs. Gable’s staffing accounts to shell companies connected with the altered harbor security team.
“Where are the copies?” Leah asked.
“Burned.”
“You kept no backup?”
Clara touched the ultrasound photograph. “Julian taught me never to carry evidence where people expect evidence.”
She unfolded the image. A strip of microprinted account numbers ran beneath the black border.
Before Leah could photograph it, the mansion lost power.
Emergency lights failed in the west hall. Maximilian drew Clara behind him as footsteps rushed outside. A security man forced the door and reached for the ultrasound.
Maximilian struck his arm aside. Leah triggered a silent alarm.
The attacker escaped through the servants’ stairs, but not before Clara recognized him as one of the men who had dragged Julian from her apartment six months earlier.
Adrian arrived with armed security thirty seconds too late.
He examined the broken lock and declared an outside intrusion.
Maximilian looked at the intact snow beyond the window. No footprints approached the house.

The attacker had never come from outside.
And Adrian’s master key was still in the lock.
