Chapter 6 - THE SAFE HOUSE THAT WASN’T SAFE

Maximilian arrested Adrian in front of the household staff.

It was theater.

He ordered the security chief confined in the wine cellar, knowing Dominic would hear within minutes. Then Leah quietly moved Adrian through a utility passage into the old chapel office.

“If he is loyal to Dominic, he’ll run,” Maximilian said. “If he is not, he’ll explain the key.”

Adrian explained.

Dominic had duplicated his master credential months earlier. Adrian discovered unauthorized access but concealed it because he was reporting separately to a federal organized-crime task force. Julian recruited him before the crash.

Clara did not trust the claim. “Then why didn’t you save him?”

Adrian’s face tightened. “Because Julian changed the extraction point without telling me.”

He showed them encrypted messages from Julian. The final one was sent at 2:47 a.m. after the official crash:

Clara is clear. Moving to Saint B. Do not contact Max until harbor signature verified.

Saint B could mean a church, hospital, street, or person.

Maximilian decided to move Clara from the estate. He announced that she had been fired and escorted off the property. Dominic watched through the foyer windows as a black SUV carried her away.

The real transfer happened beneath a parking garage. Leah drove Clara to a townhouse held under attorney privilege while an empty SUV continued north.

Mrs. Gable saw the switch.

She stood across the garage holding her staff ledger, expression unreadable. She could have raised an alarm. Instead, she turned and walked away.

At the townhouse, Clara finally slept. Maximilian remained in the kitchen, studying the ultrasound border and the household account codes.

He found prenatal vitamins beside the sink and a list in Clara’s handwriting: rent, train fare, doctor, groceries, baby. Each amount had been revised downward until groceries contained only forty-three dollars for the week.

The woman carrying a possible Russo heir had been counting coins while his dining room discarded untouched food after every dinner. Maximilian had known in theory that his household wages were low. Theory had never looked like a pregnant woman deciding whether she could afford fruit.

He photographed the list, not as evidence against her, but against himself.

One set of payments repeated every Friday: $7,100 to SB Recovery Services. The first payment occurred six months earlier, three days after Julian disappeared.

Saint B.

Leah traced the company to a private neurological clinic operating as Saint Bartholomew Recovery Center outside Providence.

Before they could leave, the townhouse alarm sounded.

Men entered through the rear garage using a current Russo security code. Maximilian took Clara into a reinforced pantry while Adrian and federal agents intercepted the intruders. One attacker escaped; another carried a photograph of Clara leaving her prenatal appointment.

The back of the photograph contained a handwritten instruction:

Confirm pregnancy. If Russo blood, bring her alive.

It was signed D.R.

Dominic Russo.

Yet the townhouse location was known only to Maximilian, Leah, Adrian, and Mrs. Gable.

Someone inside the new circle had already betrayed them.
