Chapter 9 - THE SECURITY CHIEF’S SECOND LOYALTY

Adrian did not run when Maximilian confronted him.

He watched the dash-camera footage twice, then identified the SUV as his assigned vehicle.

“I wasn’t driving.”

“Prove it,” Maximilian said.

Adrian had been at a federal task-force meeting that night. Attendance logs confirmed he entered at midnight and left at 4:18 a.m. But signing into a secure building did not prove he remained there. A hallway recording filled part of the gap, not all.

Dominic had used Adrian’s vehicle, master key, and security code to make every trail point toward the man Julian trusted.

The attack was not only murder. It was architecture.

Mrs. Gable requested exhumation of the remains buried as Julian. Dominic’s attorneys opposed it, claiming harassment of the Russo family. Maximilian publicly supported the request, breaking the family’s code of silence for the first time.

News outlets revived stories about Russo Maritime’s criminal history. Investors fled. Two captains refused shipments. Dominic called Maximilian reckless.

“You are destroying an empire over a maid’s necklace,” he said.

“A ring,” Maximilian corrected. “And a grave with the wrong name.”

While the court considered exhumation, Clara decoded more numbers hidden on the ultrasound. They matched container IDs routed through a charitable medical foundation. Each container supposedly carried hospital equipment. Their weights suggested weapons.

Julian had not stolen fourteen million. He had moved it into escrow to stop Dominic’s illegal shipments, planning to return the money after federal seizure.

Maximilian had called him a traitor in public.

Guilt became dangerous. Clara saw it pushing him toward rash choices.

“Finding him does not require you to become the man Dominic says you are,” she told him.

“You don’t know what kind of man I am.”

“Neither do you. That is the problem.”

The exhumation order was granted.

DNA identified the remains as Peter Gable.

Mrs. Gable stood beside the grave while the stone bearing Julian’s name was lifted. She did not cry until Peter’s identity was spoken aloud. Then Clara held her despite everything between them.

That evening, federal agents arrested Adrian for leaking the exhumation schedule. His encrypted phone contained messages to Dominic.

Adrian insisted they were fabricated.

Before agents took him away, he whispered to Maximilian, “Leah knows the old family cipher. I don’t.”

The messages used that cipher.
